Stratford St Mary Lock Working Party 18th November 2006

Report by Jeff Burroughs

Thanks to all those who came to the lock today. As you will see from the photographs we were rewarded with a lovely sunny day. It started off a bit cold and fresh and was a contrast to the day before when it rained non-stop for hours.

With the water levels quite high and rising (the lower dam was completely covered by the time we left) it was decided to do some more clearing of the vegetation and fallen trees. Much of the day was taken up moving the cut down and chopping branches to put onto the fire. The pathway to the end of the spill-way was cleared to enable better access to the site.

Towards the sluice end of the spill-way an old winch was uncovered and it was suggested that it was part of the old hire boat business that operated prior to the new sluice gates being fitted. Tony Platt has since confirmed that it was used for hauling boats from the lock cut up to the other channel and dates from the time when pleasure boats were operated to and from Stratford on both levels. The late John Marriage remembered this activity and said that it was still in use at least into the late 1940s. If you know the story or perhaps even have any photographs then it would be great to preserve this small piece of our heritage.

It was great to see River Stour Trust Chairman, Tony Platt, on site. He came bearing good news regarding ownership of parts of the site and the lower cut as these were now secure in the hands of the Trust. Debbie Bryce (River Stour Trust Council member) was another first-time visitor who was very also very interested in our progress. We also met a couple of local residents who were out walking their dogs and enjoying the day. They stopped for a chat and were pleased to see that the work being done to benefit river users and the local community.

At the next working party we hope to have some hot mince pies and a ‘Winter Warmer’, why not come along and find out? We would like to see more willing volunteers and welcome any assistance.Details of future working parties

The water levels had risen following heavy rainfall and contrast with those in the photos taken a month ago.
